Nematodes are microscopic worms. There are two types of nematodes: soil nematodes that live in the soil, and foliar nematodes that live in stems and leaves. Some are beneficial because they attack unwanted garden insects.
Parasitic Nematodes
Parasitic nematodes are the beneficial ones. These nematodes attack and eat more than 400 varieties of borers, caterpillars and insect root pests.
What Nematodes Kill
Nematodes are helpful in killing: root weevils, cutworms, cabbage root maggots, lawn grubs, turf webworms, peach tree borers, iris borers, and flea beetle larvae.
Life in the Soil
Parasitic nematodes spend their entire life cycle in the soil killing larvae of pests. Add too many and they will upset the balance of predators in the garden.
Bought at Nursery
Beneficial nematodes can be purchased at nurseries for distribution in the garden. Apply nematodes by mixing with water in a watering can or hose sprayer.
Plant the Nematode
Nematodes also can be added to the soil when planting plants. Dig the hole and then place the nematodes directly into the hole before planting.
