Grass is a resilient plant that will find ways to grow even in adverse conditions, including through the asphalt in your driveway. Over time, cracks develop in asphalt and grass will often find a way to squeeze through. But there are a few ways to take care of this problem and prevent the growth of grass in these tight spaces. In fact, it's very simple using one of several methods because you don't have to worry about protecting the surrounding grass.
Chemicals
If you don't mind using chemical weed and grass control agents around your home, there are several products available that will destroy grass, weeds or any other plant they come in contact with. Roundup is a leading consumer brand of spray-on weed killer that will destroy grass growing through asphalt. Other effective products include Pramitol and Knockout.
White Vinegar
For a more natural cure for grass growing through asphalt, you can grab a bottle right off the kitchen shelf. White vinegar, a safe ingredient found in many recipes, also makes an excellent weed and grass killer. Pouring full strength white vinegar directly on the grass growing through cracks in your driveway, sidewalk or other surface will kill the blades of grass with the acetic acid it contains. This method will not kill the root, though, and the grass may return in the future.
Boiling Water
It might sound strange to think of water as a grass killer since plants need water to live. But if you boil the water, the extreme temperature will basically cook the grass and destroy it. This method may require more than one application, but you can rest assured you are not doing any real harm to the environment with this remedy.
Alcohol
Rubbing alcohol is a substance found in many homes. Alcohol leaves your skin feeling dry after application because it pulls the moisture out of the skin. It will do the same thing to plants, causing them to dehydrate and die. Pour full strength rubbing alcohol directly on the grass and into the cracks where it is growing to kill it completely. Just remember that if the liquid gets on any other plants, it will kill them too.
