Elegant container gardens can add curb appeal to your home when placed on a front porch or walkway. Lovely container gardens are simple, can be assembled quickly and are not extremely expensive, especially if you use a mix of annuals (plants that usually live for one growing season only) and perennials (plants that come up year after year with proper care). They will add seasonal beauty to your home and are sure to get many compliments!
The Basics
Purchase light-weight containers (18 inches in diameter or more) made of tough resin or plastic. Purchase potting soil with time-release fertilizers so the container garden will thrive during the entire growing season. To over-winter spring container tulip bulbs, pre-plant the bulbs the fall before. If you live in an area where the winters are too cold to leave the container outside, put it in a cool basement until spring. Keep the soil barely moist. Too much water will encourage mold and mildew.
Elegant Spring Container
Plant five to 10 tulip bulbs in a circular grouping in the center of the container. Let over-winter. In the spring, add three baby's breath or other plants with small white flowers, spacing them evenly around the tulips. Add three narrow leaf, white-edged English ivy plants in open spaces near the container edges where they can spill over. If you don't have time to over-winter tulip bulbs, substitute an azalea bush with colorful leaves and flowers in the container center instead.
Elegant Summer Container
Plant one blue hydrangea bush in the center of the container. Plant three yellow flower begonias or pink flower impatiens, evenly spaced around the hydrangea bush. Plant three Vinca vine plants or wide-leaf, English ivy plants near the container edges where they can spill over. The hydrangea bush is a perennial, so it will come up year after year in the container. You will just have to add annuals like the begonias and Vinca vine each summer!
Elegant Fall Container:
Plant one red ornamental grass plant in the center of the container. Plant three orange heuchera plants or red flower sedum plants, evenly spaced around the ornamental grass. Plant three yellow or white flower hardy pansy plants in the open spaces between the heuchera or sedum. Some ornamental grasses and sedum plants are perennial, so they will come up year after year in the container. You will just have to add annuals like the pansies each fall!
