Majesty palm trees are rapid growers, albeit "rapid" is a relative term when it comes to palm trees. A fully matured Majesty palm will reach a height of 15 to 20 feet, and maybe more. Climate, water and nutrients play important roles in how tall and how fast this native of Madagascar will grow. Rates of growth differ in various stages, from germination to establishment and beyond.
Germination
Plant Majesty palm seeds in a commercial growing medium that contains peat moss or sterile sphagnum moss mixed with perlite or vermiculite, to the mid-point of the seed's diameter. Give the seeds plenty of light and moisture. Allow two to three months for the germination process to complete itself before transplanting into the soil.
First Eight Months
It can take from six to eight months for a Majesty palm to establish itself in the soil. Keep the root ball and the backfill soil moist during this phase of growth; a leading cause of death among young Majesty palms is improper watering. Provide adequate support for the trunk. Use a 2-by-4-inch wood board that's about 1 foot in length and gardener's tape to attach the trunk to the board for growth support. Look for the palm to start producing new leaves. This is a key indicator that the Majesty palm is growing successfully and establishing itself in its location.
Annual Growing Season
The growing season for majesty palms lasts from April 1 to August 1. This is when the palm will produce visible spurts of growth in height and leaf production. Growth will be most active during the summer months. Fertilize the palm during the growing season to promote healthy growth. Skipping fertilization will retard the growth rate of a Majesty palm. Choose a slow-release granular fertilizer formulated for palms that includes magnesium, nitrogen and potassium. Use the canopy of the tree as a guide to how far you should broadcast the fertilizer. For example, if the diameter is 4 feet wide, sprinkle the fertilizer from the edge of the diameter up to 6 inches of the trunk. Do not fertilizer the trunk area as this can cause the trunk to burn.
Ten Year Growth and Beyond
During the first ten years, the Majesty palm will grow quite rapidly. In warm climates and given proper care, the tree can grow up to 10 feet in height within the first ten years. However, by the time the palm turns 11 years old, the growth rate will start to decline. The growth rate will continue to slow down more and more as the trunk develops and matures. This is quite normal and a very good sign. The slow-down is a signal that the plant is transitioning from youth to maturity. A fully mature Majesty palm will reach a height of 15 feet or more.
