If you've ever planted a garden, you realize how upsetting it can be to have all of your hard work and lovely flora munched on by deer. Although they are majestic creatures, deer can be a nuisance to your garden. If you are planting a shade garden, there are several types of plants that you can include in your garden that are deer resistant.
Pachysandra
An ideal deer-resistant ground cover to use in your shade garden is pachysandra. A member of the boxwood family, this evergreen plant is comprised of short wooded stems with spiky, leathery leaves. In the spring, this plant blooms small wispy white flowers. Not only is this plant deer resistant, but it also is an ideal way to keep weed growth to a minimum, as they tend to choke weeds.
Forget-Me-Nots
To add a brilliant burst of color to your shade garden that deer won't eat, consider planting Forget-Me-Nots. These flowers are generally biennials, but can be perennials. They grow on thin, scraggly stems on which clusters of small blue flowers, 1 centimeter in diameter, grow. They are virtually scentless during the daytime yet, in the evening and overnight, they have a very fragrant aroma.
Daffodil
Daffodils are ornamental bulb plants that grow in shade and will not be eaten by deer. These plants are a member of the Amaryllis family and are famous for their trumpet-shaped centers, which are surrounded by six floral leaves. Although these springtime blooms do not live as long as those that are planted in sunlight, they are worth planting in your shade garden, as they add a brilliant burst of color.
Butterfly Bush
A butterfly bush not only adds a lovely hint of color to your shade garden, it is deer resistant and also attracts beautiful living creatures that are not destructive to your shade garden--butterflies and hummingbirds. The butterfly bush is an evergreen shrub in climates with temperatures that remain above 20 degrees Fahrenheit, otherwise they are a deciduous shrub. These ornamental bushes typically reach a height of 15 to 20 feet. Conical-shaped flowers shoot off the branches and come in a variety of colors, including purple, white, pink and red. The boom time for these shrubs is mid- to late summer.
