Coreopsis
Coreopsis, or Coreopsis grandiflora, is a fast growing perennial that is easy to grow. It is aptly suited for container gardening and produces abundant flowers. Flowers bloom daisy-like in appearance and are a yellow to gold color. Plant a coreopsis in mostly sunny conditions to full sun. Soil should be dry and ordinary. Propagate via clump division or seed.
Calendula
Calendula, or Calendula officinalis, is an easy to grow annual. It grows quickly, reaching 12 to 30 inches in height and the same in width. This is a great addition to an herb container garden. Leaves are oval at the bottom and lance-like at the top. Plant a calendula in average soil in sun or partial shade conditions. Propagate via seed. It should be cut back in the hottest weather conditions.
Chocolate Daisy
Chocolate daisy, or Berlandiera lyrata, is a perennial with gray-green foliage. The leaves smell like chocolate and this unique quality makes it interesting. Yellow flowers have a maroon center and bloom April through November. It grows 1 to 2 feet high. Plant a chocolate daisy in sun or partial shade in moist soil. Propagate via seed. It will need deadheading to have continuous blooming. This is a great patio container addition as it will give the entire area an interesting aroma.
Ageratum
Ageratum, or Ageratum houstonianum, is a great container annual. It grows 2 feet high with fuzzy flowers that are blue, purple, pink or lavender. Oval leaves are 4 inches long. Plant an ageratum in bright sunlight and water it regularly. Propagate via seed. This plant makes a nice rounded mum-like addition to your garden and has the ability to self-seed.
