If moles are digging up your yard and making it look less than perfect, you may want to try using a home remedy to get them out of your yard. According to researchers at the Ohio State University Extension Office, home mole remedies have an inconsistent effect. However, unlike other mole removal options, such as traps or chemicals, most home remedies are relatively harmless to the mole itself, although they may cause the animal some discomfort.
One of the most common home remedies to get rid of and repel moles is to mix a solution of castor oil, an oil-based cleaning solution or soap, water and, sometimes, cayenne pepper. The amounts used in the mixture vary, depending on the recipe. One mole repellent recipe calls for 1 cup of an oil-based soap, 1 oz. of castor oil and 1/4 cup of cayenne pepper mixed together. Once you've mixed the solution, add 3 cups of water and spray it on your yard with a garden hose sprayer. The mixture is supposed to make the mole's skin itch and burn, which causes it to leave.
If you love to garden, plant a mole repellent in your garden to get rid of your moles. Mole repellent plants include daffodils, marigolds, alliums, fritillarias, mole plant and castor beans. Don't plant mole plant or castor beans in your yard if you have small children or animals, as both plants are poisonous. Keep in mind that mole-repellent plants repel moles but don't kill them. So, the plants should keep other moles from coming into your yard and make your yard unwelcoming to the moles you already have.
If growing plants isn't for you, get rid of the moles in your yard by adding jalapeno peppers. According to the Oregon State University Extension Office, jalapeno peppers repel moles. Dig small holes around the area of your yard the moles have invaded, and place fresh jalapeno peppers inside. For best results, make sure your peppers are within 4 inches of the area the moles have invaded. Placing jalapeno peppers in the ground could cause jalapeno plants to grow in your yard the following year from the seeds, so be prepared to pull out any leftover plants.
If you love animals, get a dog to help you rid your yard of moles. Dogs are not fond of moles and tend to dig them up and get rid of them wherever they find them. If you don't like dogs, don't get one just to get rid of your moles, and be aware that the dog could cause more damage to your yard trying to find the moles than the moles did themselves.
