Planning outdoor planter box arrangements is an important part of getting a finished look to your home and garden. Planter boxes contain separate areas of growing plants and they provide your yard with points of visual variety depending on what style you choose. Horse Trough
If you are interested in a very rural and rustic look, turn an old horse trough into a planter box. Place it near your driveway or fence and fill it with a variety of daisies and wildflowers, which will give it a bright splash of color and a densely overgrown look. There are planters that look like horse troughs, but if you use the real thing, remember to drill some holes in the bottom for drainage purposes.
Planter Bench
A planter bench allows you to have both seating and beautiful greenery in your garden. A planter bench is a bench that has planters attached to it in some way. Some models consist of a flat surface with the planter area growing through the bottom of the bench. In this type of bench, some seating space is given over to the plant, but typically the bench is extra long as a result. In other models, there are two planters built on either side of the bench.
Low Planter Box
If you do not have a lot of space and don't want a large planter box, choose a long, low planter box instead. These planter boxes can be set along the edge of a porch and planted with short flowers. They give the yard a low strip of color without being overwhelming. For a coordinating touch, match the planter to the wood trim of your home. A low planter box is easy to get to and is less overwhelming than a larger planter box.
Soften Sharp Edges
A large planter box with overhanging vegetation helps soothe the hard edges of your garden. If you have sharp edges that interrupt the flow of your garden, whether they are the edges of garden stairs or the corners of your decks, place a planter there. Fill the planters with ivy to conceal the sharp edges and to add a touch of green to the area.
