According to the company's website, the best-selling most popular chain saw it manufacturers is the "Farm Boss" model MS 290. The unit is designed for limbing, felling trees and bucking firewood. More powerful than an occasional-use model, the Farm Boss has a list of standard features and product specifications.
Standard Features
Standard features built into the MS 290 include, toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers, adjustable automatic bar and chain oiler, side-access chain tensioner, IntelliCarb compensating carburetor and a forged connecting rod with caged needle bearings. STIHL also includes a chain adjustment tool and a small slotted screwdriver with every Farm Boss sold. These tools are used to install tension chains, as well as for making adjustments to the air-fuel mixture.
Engine Specifications
In addition to the Farm Boss model MS 290, STIHL manufactures other models in the Farm Boss family of products, including the MS 310 and MS 390. The MS 290 is equipped with a 56.5 cubic centimeter engine which generates 3.8 horsepower at an operating speed of 9,500 rpm (revolutions per minute). The MS 310 is equipped with a 59.0 cubic centimeter engine which generates 4.0 horsepower at a normal operating speed of 9,500 rpm. The MS 390 is equipped with a 64.1 cubic centimeter engine which generates 4.3 horsepower at an operating speed of 9,500 rpm. All three models have a maximum operating speed of 13,000 to 13,500 rpm.
Fuel Capacities and Types
STIHL has equipped all three Farm Boss models with 18.9 ounce fuel tanks and 11.2 ounce chain oil tanks. For all three models, STIHL recommends using unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89. Each model is equipped with a 2-cycle engine, and STIHL recommends a fuel-to-oil mixing ratio of 50 to 1. The company also suggests using STIHL brand 2-cycle oil, because it has been specially formulated to run in its products.
Bars and Chains
All three models may be outfitted with 16-, 18-, or 20-inch cutting bars. These cutting bars have been engineered to operate with saw chains of either 0.325 or 3/8-inch pitch. The dry weight of each model, meaning without fuel, oil, bar or chain is 13-pounds.
Ignition and Fuel System
STIHL has equipped all three models with an electronic magneto ignition system as well as an all position diaphragm carburetor with an integrated fuel pump.
