Many flowerpots designed to hang from your balcony, deck or porch railings have screws intended to secure the pots to wooden railings, but some styles work with vinyl as well. To avoid hardware, though, look for planter boxes with brackets that hang over the railing or pots that straddle the top of the rail rather than screw directly into it.
Flowerpot Options
Flowerpots that work with vinyl railings come in multiple designs, so you don't have to sacrifice style. Most saddle-style railing planters, which fit over the top of the rail, are plastic, but you can choose from several colors and shapes. Some might be squared off on all sides, for example, while others have a softer, rounder look. Flower planters or boxes with brackets that hang over the top of the railing come in different materials, such as wood or open metal baskets with coco fiber mats as liners.
When You're Ready to Buy
Measure the width of your vinyl railing before you buy any type of flowerpot so you can find one that fits snugly and securely over the railing. When using hanging brackets, buy zip ties to help secure the brackets to the railings without the need for screws. Also, check your chosen flowerpots for drainage holes. If they don't have any, drill 1/2-inch holes every 4 to 6 inches along the bottom of the pots to ensure adequate drainage.
