STIHL 029 Chain Saw Specs
Specifications for the Stihl 029 chain saw, including the engine, fuel system, ignition system, bar, chain and safety features.
The Stihl 029 chain saw can help you tackle backyard cutting jobs that a manual saw isn't stout enough to handle. A review of this tool's specifications can help you make a purchasing decision or simply give you an at-a-glance reference for replacement parts.
Engine
The Stihl 029 is powered by a single-cylinder, two-stroke engine.
Engine Measurements
Piston displacement: 3.45 cubic inches.
Cylinder bore: 1.81 inches.
Piston stroke: 1.34 inches.
Engine Speed
Idle speed: 2,800 rpm.
Maximum speed (cut-off speed): 12,500 rpm.
Fuel System
Because chain saws must be able to work when held at different angles, a conventional "float-type" carburetor, which senses the fuel level, won't work. To solve this problem, the Stihl 029 has an "all-position diaphragm carburetor." Instead of a carburetor float sensor, the integral fuel pump relies on a flexible disk -- called a diaphragm -- to signal the need for more fuel.
Air filters: a prefilter (coarse) and a bisectional box filter.
Fuel mixture: The Stihl 029 uses a fuel mixture made of gasoline and oil in a 50:1 ratio -- this means to add 1 part oil to 50 parts gasoline.
Tip
Use regular (low-octane) gasoline with a minimum pump octane rating of 87 .
Engine oil: Stihl two-stroke engine oil or a comparable brand, classified "TC."
Fuel tank capacity: 1.2 pints.
Oil tank capacity: 0.68 pint.
Ignition System
The Stihl 029 has a magneto-type, breakerless ignition system.
Spark Plugs (Suppressed)
Type: Bosch WSR 6 F.
Heat range: 200.
Electrode gap: 0.02 inch.
Spark plug thread: M 14 x 1.25, 0.37 inch long.
Bar and Chain
A chain saw works on a chain-and-bar principle. When the engine drives the chain -- with embedded teeth -- around a guide bar, the teeth cut the wood.
Guide Bar
Type: Stihl reduced kickback bar (green label) -- Rollomatic with sprocket nose.
Lengths: 16, 18 or 20 inches.
Chain
Type: Stihl low-kickback chain (green label) -- Rapid-Micro 2, 0.325 inch (26 RM 2) or Rapid-Micro 2, 3/8 inch (33 RM 2, 36 RM 2).
Chain sprocket: seven-tooth or eight-tooth for 0.325-inch pitch, seven-tooth for 3/8-inch pitch.
Safety Features
Front hand guard. Protects the forward hand against protruding branches and keeps the hand in back from touching the chain in case it slips off the guide bar.
Rear hand guard. Protects the right hand.
Chain brake. If the chain saw experiences kickback, the chain brake stops the chain from rotating.
Chain catcher. Helps prevent a loose or broken chain from cutting the operator.
Warning
The safety features of the Stihl 029 do not prevent kickback; they are simply designed to reduce injuries from kickback.
