Vigorous, twining vines can bring gorgeous blooms to the landscape. Gardeners have hundreds of choices for climbing plants that grow in partial shade. In addition to sun requirements, the most important considerations when planting vines are your USDA Plant Hardiness Zone, the soil and the amount of moisture the plants needs.
Chilean Jasmine
Chilean jasmine (Mandevilla laxa) will grow as an annual in colder climates, or, if it's grown in a container, the plant can be moved indoors for the winter. In milder winter weather it will thrive outdoors. The vine will grow up to 15-feet tall or more with blossoms of fragrant, clustered white flowers. It prefers partial shade to full sun with moderate water. It grows in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 9 through 11.
Clematis
The big, purple blossoms of the clematis hybrid Ramona make this vine one of the most favored of the species. The flowers are up to 6 inches across; the vine grows to 10-feet tall. It prefers well-drained soil and moderate water in partial shade to full sun and grows in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 through 11.
Climbing Snapdragon
The climbing snapdragon (Asarina antirrhiniflora) blossoms in spring and summer in part to full shade. The vine grows up to 6-feet tall and produces lavender, blue and red flowers with a yellow throat. It can be grown on a trellis or in a hanging basket. The plant thrives in well-drained soil with moderate water in USDA Hardiness Zones 9 through 11.
Flowering Maple
Flowering maple (Abutilon megapotamicum) will bring showy flowers to the garden that look like red and yellow lanterns. The vine blooms in partial shade in spring and summer and grows up to 10-feet tall and just as wide. It grows well on either a trellis or flat against a wall. Flowering maple likes well-drained soil with moderate water in USDA Hardiness Zones 8 through 10.
Guinea Gold Vine
The flowers on the Guinea gold vine (Hibbertia scandens) resemble yellow roses, making this a favorite vine for the part-shade garden. This vine grows quickly up to 10-feet tall and likes partial shade to full sun with moderate water. Plant it as a vine on a trellis or as a ground cover. It grows in USDA Hardiness Zones 9 through 12.
