Yellow tipped or variegated shrubs add visual interest and a splash of color to the garden or landscape plan. Golden tipped evergreen shrubs that lend their structure to topiary forms are particularly attractive in groupings or as foundation plantings. Literally dozens of different varieties and species of variegated foliage shrubs lend themselves to landscape design. Experiment with spreading short forms, dense, full shrubs and stately, tall shapes.
Arborvitae
Arborvitae, also known as Thuja, are widely used in rural and urban landscapes. Available in a diverse range of shapes and sizes, Arborvitae presents several different color variations, including gold- or bronze-tipped leaves. Select species that will not outgrow their space at maturity. Arborvitae lends itself to topiary design. An annual light pruning will maintain the desired size and structure.
Cream Cracker Dogwood
A low-growing shrub, cream cracker dogwood (Cornus alba) grows to only 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide. The leaves are a vibrant green with yellow-to-cream-colored margins or tips. The leaves turn deep purple in autumn. The cream cracker dogwood grows in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 5 to 8.
Honeylocust
The sunburst variety of thornless honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos inermis) has yellow tipped leaves. This hardy plant, if untrimmed, will grow to 60 feet tall and 40 feet wide at maturity.
Golden Tip Privet
Golden tip privet (Ligustrum japonicum) is a dense, upright, busy semi-evergreen shrub often used in hedges and borders. New growth leaves are brightened by brilliant golden yellow tips. As the leaves age, they turn a vivid dark black-green. The leaves are lance shaped. Golden tip privet has white, fragrant flowers followed by a tiny black fruit that provides nutritious food for birds and wildlife. This hardy shrub grows to 15 to 18 feet. Shape and size are controlled by twice annual pruning.
