Many homeowners and gardeners choose to plant and cultivate flowering vines, which tend to attract birds and butterflies with their colorful blooms. Some flowering vines also provide sweet scents that emit a pleasant fragrance throughout the garden. If you are trying to decide which type of fragrant, flowering vine to plant on your fence, trellis or patio wall, you have several varieties from which to choose.
Honeysuckles
Honeysuckle vines are easy to grow, come in a wide variety of types and are very hardy, according to About Honeysuckle. These flowering vines produce trumpet-shaped blooms in shades of yellow and white. They attract butterflies and hummingbirds with their sweet fragrances and only need moderate water to survive. You can choose from several types of honeysuckle vines, both evergreen and deciduous. Some grow well along fences or trellises, while others can be planted as ground cover or bushes. If you want to plant honeysuckle vines in your yard, simply use cuttings of already established vines. Plant the vine cuttings a minimum of two feet apart because they will grow very quickly and aggressively. Make sure to water them thoroughly until the vines show signs of new growth.
Trumpet Flowers
Trumpet flower vines come in two main varieties: the trumpet creeper and the trumpet vine. Both types of flowering vines feature colorful, fragrant blooms. Trumpet creepers are native to the U.S. Gulf Coast region and feature 3-inch flowers in yellow, orange and red. This flowering vine can grow 30 to 40 feet in a single flowering season. Trumpet vines are native to the Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern U.S. and feature 2- to 3-inch flower blooms. Trumpet vines are also called cross vines and they attract hummingbirds in the spring and summer. If you are interested in growing trumpet flowering vines in your yard, plant them on some type of climbing support, such as a fence, tree trunk or trellis.
Jasmine
Native to Asia, jasmine flowering vines are evergreen plants that feature tiny yellow or white fragrant flowers. These sweet-smelling flowering vines typically thrive in USDA zones 7 to 9, but can also withstand short periods of drought, according to Gardening Central. Jasmine flowers produce such a sweet fragrance that they are often used in perfumes and essential oils. If you are considering planting this exotic vine in your garden, choose a variety that has proven successful in your climate and environment. Plant the vine in full sun and water it often. Most climbing jasmine vines grow well on sturdy trellises.
