American gardens tend to have a distinct set of rules, such as using tall plants in the background, whereas English gardens exude an informal, chaotic look. Choosing the right type of flowers for an English garden is not a difficult task when you consider that the haphazard placement of the flowers lends to its charm. This results in an unkempt, natural ambiance to your flower garden that looks as if Mother Nature placed it there.
Foxglove
Foxgloves grow to heights of 3 to 5 feet and the bell-shaped flowers cascade down the stem. This flower is often seen in pictures of English gardens. Foxgloves grow best in full shade but can tolerate partial sunlight. Sandy well-drained soils are necessary for this biennial plant. The flowers bloom in early summer in mauve, creamy white or pink shades. It is a wise idea to place flowers in your English garden that bloom at different times of the year to provide a wide variety of color throughout the season.
Lily of the Valley
The lily of the valley plant is a hardy perennial. It has small, bell-shaped white flowers with a sweet scent often used in perfumes. They grow to heights of only 6 inches, but have a spread of 18 inches. The dainty-looking plant prefers shady or partial shade and moist, well-drained soil.
Bleeding Hearts
The bleeding hearts flower has heart-shaped blooms that have pink or red outer petals and white inner petals. It grows to heights of 2 1/2 feet and does best in zones 3 through 9. Bleeding heart plants bloom in the early spring months.
Verbena bonariensis
Verbena bonariensis is a flower that will provide color in your English garden from early summer until late autumn. The tall flower reaches heights of 6 feet and has tiny, pinkish-purple blooms on long stems with almost no foliage. It thrives in full sunlight.
