Also known as bougainvillea, this showy, evergreen, perennial originated in Brazil and is commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions. Bugambilia is an easy-to-care-for, vine-growing plant that grows to heights of 4 to 6 feet, and blooms from July into fall with eye-popping colors including purple, pink, red and orange. It is hardy in growing zones 9 through 11; in zones 8, or below, it is best to grow the plant in a container, or as an annual.
Bugambilia grows best in full sunlight--at least 5 hours daily, although more is better for increased flower production. The best temperatures for bugambilia are 75t to 95 degrees F during the day, and around 65 degrees F at night.
The plant needs well-draining, fertile growing medium. A soilless medium is best. Avoid any medium with high peat levels.
Bugambilia plants need average watering. Water two to three times weekly just to keep the growing medium moist. Do not over water, or leave water standing around the plant.
Use a slow, time-released, balanced fertilizer. Fertilize every other week spring through fall, when the plant is actively growing. From fall through winter, cut back to once a month. Never apply the fertilizer to dry soil; moisten first, then water in well afterward.
Bugambilia can be pruned any time of the year to keep it shaped and remove spent blooms. If desired, the plant can be pruned heavily to form a hedge.
Bugambilia blooms best when root bound, so wherever you plant it, keep it there. If grown in a container, it can grow in a 1-gallon pot very well for up to three years, or more.
