Scotts lawn care products can help keep your lawn and garden looking great all year long. Learning which lawn care products to apply, and when and how to apply them, is the best way for homeowners to maintain lush, healthy growth. Create a lawn care calendar that fits your area of the country to keep track of product applications.
Establish a Lawn Program
The area in which you live is not the only factor to consider when establishing a lawn care program. The type of grass in your lawn, exposure to sun and shade and watering schedule or local rainfall all play a part in lawn care. The Scott website provides an instant lawn care customization program for anywhere in the United States.
Autumn Lawn Care
Early autumn offers the best growing circumstances for improving the overall condition of your lawn. The weather is cooler, there is adequate moisture in the ground and there is still plenty of sunshine. This can be an excellent time to apply Scotts® Turf Builder® WinterGuard Fall Lawn Fertilizer. Aerate the lawn before applying fertilizer for a more thorough uptake of the product. Even distribution across the lawn is also important.
This is also a good time to use Ortho® Weed-B-Gon MAX® to spot treat annoying weeds. Another product for fall application is Ortho® Weed-B-Gon MAX® Plus Crabgrass Control Ready-To-Use. Fall is a good time for your weed control program, because the weeds are storing energy in their roots for overwintering rather than using the energy for leaf production. Weed control products applied in the fall are more readily taken down into the roots for a complete kill.
Any bald patches, worn areas or brown spots in your lawn can be treated in the fall with Scotts® PatchMaster® Lawn Repair Mix. It contains fast-growing grass and fertilizer that will get those spots green again quickly. Areas that get heavy foot traffic should be aerated to loosen compacted soil before doing lawn repair and re-seeding.
Keep up with mowing your grass, and do it often so you will not need to cut more than 1/3 of the total length when you mow. Cut at the tallest suggested length for the type of grass in your lawn.
Spring Lawn Care
Crabgrass and other weeds that escaped complete eradication in the fall can be treated in the early spring with a pre-emergent weed control. Feed your spring lawn with Scotts® Turf Builder® Lawn Fertilizer with 2-percent Iron to get your grass off to a good start so it will develop strong roots and crowd out weeds.
Summer Lawn Care
Between June and August, use Scotts® Turf Builder® With SummerGuard to provide nutrients to help guard against damage from heat and drought, as well as ingredients for insect control. In southern areas with longer growing seasons, two applications is recommended.
Watering
Any lawn product requires plenty of water to dissolve properly and avoid fertilizer burn. Always follow handling and application instructions.
