Dried Spices and Fruit Peels
Use dried herbs found in the supermarket in bottles as effective repellents. Sprinkle them on the ground on borders of the gardens to keep cats away. Rosemary, cayenne pepper, dried mustard, and lavender repel cats because they don't like the odor. Fruit peels such as lemon and orange rinds, placed in borders of the garden, keep cats away. The spices or peels can be placed inside the house too, for instance, near plants and cupboards.
Essential Oils
Try essential oils to keep cats away from indoor spots such as pantries, kitchen cabinets, houseplants and garbage. Cats don't like essential oil scents such as lemon, lavender, orange, cinnamon and lavender. Using an eyedropper, wet a few cotton balls with a few drops of essential oil. Put the cotton balls in corners of kitchen cabinets or closets or near potted plants. The oil can be rubbed on floors, baseboards, or kitchen cabinet doors with paper towels. This is best used indoors.
Homemade Infusions and Sprays
Take a 1/4 cup of one type of dried herb and boil in water on the stove to make a spray. Use cinnamon, rosemary, cayenne pepper or lavender. When mixing different herbs for a spray, use 1/8 of a cup of each herb with water in a small pot. Boil the herb mixture on top of stove, then strain though a cheesecloth. Put the strained liquid in a clean bottle and spray indoors and outdoors, wherever you don't want your cat to go. A solution made of 1/4 cup vinegar and water, put in a bottle and then sprayed directly at cats, stops them inside or out. Do not use too much cayenne pepper--it is harmful in strong doses.
