The Scotts Weed & Feed range of products supplies nutrients to the lawn and kills weeds at the same time. Most of Scott's Weed & Feed products contain postemergent herbicides, designed to kill existing weeds rather than prevent new weed seeds from growing. The exception are the company's crabgrass preventer formulas.
Scotts Weed & Feed products combine lawn feeding fertilizer with chemical weed control. These products can be applied in spring and/or fall, depending on the lawn type. Scotts recommends applying Weed & Feed some time between April and June. For warm-season lawns, Weed & Feed can be applied in fall to combat winter weeds and strengthen the grass. Do not apply the product in the summer, or in temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Read the labels carefully before you start work. Some products may damage newly seeded lawns, and pre-emergent herbicides can prevent grass seed from sprouting.
Scotts TurfBuilder Weed & Feed is designed for use on cool-season grasses typically grown in northern climates. These include Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea), both of which grow in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 2 through 7. For these lawns, apply Weed & Feed in late spring, once weeds are actively growing. Apply on a day when the grass is wet using a rotary or drop spreader set to apply 2.8 pounds per 1,000 square feet.
Scotts Bonus S Southern Weed & Feed is designed for use on grasses that would be injured by the herbicide in TurfBuilder. These include St. Augustine grass (Stenotaphrum secundatum), which grows in USDA zones 8 through 10, and Zoysia grass (Zoysia species), which grows in USDA zones 6 through 9. The regular TurfBuilder Weed & Feed can be used on other warm-season grasses like Bermuda grass (Cynodon sp.), which grows in USDA zones 7 through 10. Set the spreader to apply 3.4 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Southern Weed & Feed can be applied in late winter, spring or fall.
Annual crabgrasses (Digitaria spp.) germinate in spring when soil temperatures are above 55 to 60 F for a week to 10 days. This typically falls in mid-April for lawns with cool-season grass. Scotts has a pre-emergent formula to prevent annual weeds from germinating. Step 1 Crabgrass Preventer Plus Lawn Food is applied at a rate of 2.7 pounds per 1,000 square feet. As with other products, settings for individual spreaders are on the fertilizer packaging and the Scotts website.
