Preparation
Before planting a flower, you should make sure your kids have some child sized, child safe gardening tools so that they can do the work themselves. Handheld spades, shovels and gardening gloves for kids are available in gardening stores.
Selecting Flowers
Carefully selecting the type of flower your kids will plant will ensure that they are interested in growing things. Kids love flowers that make an impact, so choose a large flower, like a sunflower, or a colorful flower that is easy, like a petunia Some kids will be more interested in growing things if they can pick the flower they planted for a bouquet, so choose flowers like zinnias that will actually produce blooms more vigorously if they are cut often. When you select flowers, keep in mind that you can buy most types of flowers as seeds, as seedlings or fully grown plants. Ask the clerk at the gardening store which plant stage would be right for you.
Planting
Most flowers and flower seed packets come with instructions for how deep you should plant, and how much sunlight and water the plant needs.This varies greatly from plant to plant.
How much sunlight your flower needs will determine where you should plant the flower. If the flower doesn't need much sunlight, plant it in a shady spot; if it needs a lot of sunlight, plant it in a spot that gets at least six hours of sun.
Plant your flower at the depth the package dictates, and use a growing mix to help nourish it. Then, water the flower and watch it grow.
Remember that plants need water on an ongoing basis, and pay attention to the instructions that came with the flower for how many times per week you should water the flower.
