Indoor grow rooms are ideal for growing certain types of plants quickly and efficiently, because you can regulate the light, water, nutrients and safety of your plants within these rooms. However, these rooms can become quite warm because of all the light and lack of air flow, so a portable air conditioner may be required.
Purchase Correct A/C
Purchase a portable A/C unit that is the correct size for your grow room and will effectively cool it to the correct temperature. These portable A/C units come in different sizes and strengths, ranging from 5,200 BTU window units to two ton 12,000 BTU units which come in multiple parts. If you think you will be moving the portable A/C often around the grow room, then a smaller unit is most likely better. Price also varies for these units based on size, power and reliability.
Separate Power
A portable air conditioning unit takes up a lot of electricity, so it is essential that it have its own separate electrical hook-up. This is so it doesn't effect the grow lights or any other aspects of the growing operation. If it were hooked into the same power circuit, it might pop it, causing the lights to break, a fire to start or the whole grow room to be shut down for a period of time, which could seriously affect the plants in the grow room. So make sure you have your separate electrical line set before installing your portable A/C unit.
Placement
The placement of the portable A/C unit should be in the place where the most heat is being centrally generated, in order to regulate it the most effectively. If there is a bank of grow lights overhead, then the best place for the portable A/C unit may be on the floor, amid the plants, directly underneath the grow lights, so that hot and cool merge right at the level the plants are thriving. This may take some trial and error to figure out the optimal place for the A/C unit by setting it up and then taking specific air readings of the new average temperature. Also, observing how the plants respond to the addition of the A/C unit will help you find the best placement for the unit.
