Cut carnations can last from seven to 14 days if properly cared for. Factors that can shorten the life of cut flowers are bacteria, a plugged stem, heat and cold, and ethylene.
Bacteria
Vases should be cleaned thoroughly to remove any bacteria. Bacteria create a film on the cut area of the stem, blocking the up-flow of water to the carnation. Remove any foliage that sinks below the water level, as rotting vegetation can introduce bacteria into the water.
Flower Food
Commercial flower food made especially for cut flowers is an important additive that extends flower life by adding food and killing unwanted bacteria. Commercially purchased cut carnations usually contain a small packet of flower food.
Daily Care
To extend the life of cut carnations, cut the stem under water. Cutting the stem out of water encourages an air bubble to form on the cut, which restricts the flower's ability to absorb water. Trim a little more off the bottom of the stem every three days, change the water and add a new packet of flower food. Keep the vase three-quarters full of water at all times.
Warning
Do not place or store cut flowers near ripening fruit such as apples, as the ethylene the ripening fruit produces will shorten a cut flower's life.
