Species and Description
A large number of anthurium species exists. This plant is native to Colombia. In general, these plants have heart-shaped evergreen leaves and heart-shaped flowers that bloom year-round, although plants typically bloom more in summer.
Preferred Growing Conditions
Anthuriums thrive as houseplants because they prefer low light situations. In Hawaii, where they are grown commercially, growers provide artificial shade to protect them from sunburn. This plant also needs porous, well-draining soil and proper fertilization to produce the maximum number of blooms.
Length of Flower Life
Anthurium flowers remain on the plant for several weeks before they fade and drop to the ground. Cut flowers are also long-lived, surviving from four to six weeks, up to about 45 days in water, provided you trim the stems and change the water every few days, according to the AA Florist website.
