Lettuce, a cool-season vegetable, comes in many varieties and can easily be grown in the home garden with the proper care. Determining the correct amount of fertilizer for a lettuce garden is dependent upon soil testing.
Soil Testing
Have the soil tested to determine the amount of fertilizer and lime present in the soil. Lettuce grows best in soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.7. Soil testing typically is conducted by a local cooperative extension office.
Types of Fertilizer
For soils with a pH between 6.0 and 6.7, add a 10-10-10 fertilizer. On untested soil, a gardener's best choice is to use a 5-10-10 formula.
Application
For every 100 square feet of garden, use 3 to 4 lbs. of fertilizer. Mix at least half of the fertilizer directly into the soil with a rake at the time of planting. The remaining fertilizer can be applied as the lettuce grows, if necessary.
