Black grass fungus, or more commonly called black slime mold, thrives on damp places and is often found after a hard rain. This type of fungus is more of a superficial issue and will clear itself once dryer weather comes. However, in the meantime there are ways of getting rid of the problem yourself.
Identification
Found in cultivated grasses, black grass mold shows up during periods of intense rain. Because of this, this type of mold is often seen during late spring through to early fall. It occurs in several different colors such as black, brown, off-white, dark-red and yellow. As the problem persists, the mold will turn into a white powdery substance that will spread via the wind.
Solution
Eliminating black slime mold is a simple process since the mold grows only on the surface of the grass. To remove the mold, you can mow over the area and then rake up and dispose the remains. If this doesn't work, sprinkle baking soda or cornmeal over the mold. This will kill any mold that is still left on your grass.
Prevention
To prevent black grass fungus, water in the morning and let dry throughout the day. It is best to water less often during the rainy months for your area to help keep the fungus at bay. If the mold continues to appear regardless of how often you water, spray a vinegar solution over your grass as a fungus repellent.
