Zucchinis are a frequent favorite of gardeners because of the delicious fruit they produce and the relatively simple care they require. Large, bushy plants can produce numerous flowers that sometimes do not set fruit. This can be caused by several interdependent reasons. Recognizing the problem allows you to correct it and perhaps kick-start fruit production.
Flower Gender
Zucchinis produce both male and female flowers. On occasion, zucchini plants will produce all male flowers. This often happens early in the growing season. As the season progresses, the plant will begin to produce both types of flowers.
Environmental Effects
The flower's gender can be influenced by the temperature, the season and the length of the day. Other factors that influence gender include plant hormones and the age of the plant.
Lack of Pollinators
Pollination takes place primarily as the result of pollinators such as bees carrying the pollen from the stamen of the male flower to the female flower. When bees and other beneficial insects have low populations, pollination may not occur.
Flower Opening
Zucchini flowers tend to open in the morning and close again in the evening. If male and female flowers do not open at the same time and have access to outside pollinators, pollination will not occur.
