Function
Although cats are strict carnivores and the majority of their diet is meat, they eat plants for a simple reason: the greens are good for them. Cats have adapted to eating greens to aid in their digestion, and any cat owner knows if the feline can't pass a hairball, the first thing it does is eat grass to help throw it up.
Warning
Certain types of plants are not only toxic to cats, but also fatal. Symptoms of toxicity can be as extreme as organ failure and seizures. Cat owners who plant petunias need not worry about their feline grazing on the plant, at least from a health-related standpoint --- obviously the chewing can ruin the appearance of a lovely garden.
Considerations
Petunias come in a wide range of colors, sizes and varieties, such as spreading petunias that provide excellent ground coverage. They also make beautiful cut bouquets inside the home for special occasions or just to have. Petunias provide a beautiful setting where a cat can safely frolic.
