Concept
Conventional gardening strings plants out in long rows. There are wide spaces between the plants. Square-foot gardening groups plants into small squares instead of rows. The plants are closely spaced and use every inch of ground.
How It Works
Put nails every foot in the top of the board creating the raised bed. Use string from one nail to another to create a grid in your garden of 1-foot squares. In a given square, plant the same type of plant. As soon as those plants finish producing, remove them and replant another type of plant.
Plants Per Square
The number of plants you put into each square depends on the size of the plant. Small plants, such as radishes, will grow 16 per square foot. Medium plants, such as beets, can grow nine per square foot. Larger plants, such as leaf lettuce, can grow four per square foot. Larger plants, such as tomatoes, can grow one per square foot. Plant flowers according to the same principles.
