Dragon fruit, also called strawberry pear and night-blooming cereus, is a fast-growing perennial cactus native to tropical America. Its native distribution includes southern Mexico, Central America and parts of South America. This plant prefers tropical and subtropical climates, but can be grown in portions of Arizona with some effort.
Temperature
According to the University of Florida, dragon fruit grows well in tropical and subtropical climates not subject to freezing or frost, and can tolerate warm climates where temperatures do not exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Ideal growing temperature for dragon fruit is 65 to 77 degrees. Dragon fruit is appropriate for USDA zones 10 and 11, found in southern Arizona.
Water
Even though dragon fruit is a cactus and can deal well with dry periods, it requires more water than most other cactus. Avoid allowing the soil to remain moist for long periods, as this can encourage bacteria and fungal growth which can damage the cactus.
Soil
Dragon fruit cactus can deal with a wide range of soils, but may fare poorly in soils with a high pH or low-nutrient value. These plants do well when grown in well-drained soils high in organic matter.
