Considerations
Not only are homemade ant killers less expensive than many commercial killers, they are also less toxic. Store-bought killers use harsh chemicals to stop the ants, while homemade remedies use ingredients which are much safer.
Borax
Borax is available at your local grocery store. It is a common additive in cleaning supplies. It can be mixed with bait, such as jelly, to attract the ants. Although boric acid is a safe ingredient to use, it should be kept out of reach of children and pets to avoid accidental ingestion.
Other Baits and Traps
Another way to combat ants is to make traps out of foods which are harmful to the pests. A trap made from molasses, sugar and yeast, for example, kills ants and is made from ingredients you probably have in your pantry. Orange peel is another effective method. Making an extract out of it and spraying it on ants causes the ants to suffocate and die.
