Fig trees are part of the Ficus genus, which contains close to 1,000 species. These mostly tropical trees can be found all over the world. However, the common fig, producer of the well-known fruit, is native to the Middle East and Mediterranean. These plants have spread to many different countries and are grown as far north as Canada.
Height
According to Purdue University, figs are normally small trees between 10 and 30 feet high. Smaller specimens may be grown in pots when the local climate is not conducive to growing figs outdoors.
Width
Figs have relatively small trunks, rarely exceeding 7 inches in diameter. They also tend to have shallow, spreading roots, which can cover up to 50 feet of ground around the trunk. Branches may spread out widely from the main trunk if not pruned back.
Pruning
Fig trees are often pruned to encourage better production. Branches may be notched to encourage them to branch laterally, for a better yield. Fig trees may also be pruned to a relatively short height to make picking easier.
