Moisture
Fungus gnat larvae thrive in wet potting soil. Allow the houseplant soil to dry as much as possible between waterings to discourage the larvae. Most plants don't need watering until the soil feels dry at a depth of 2 inches. Empty the saucer under the pot as soon as the water drains through.
Sticky Traps
Yellow sticky traps placed around houseplants attract adult fungus gnats. Make your own yellow traps by coating squares of yellow plastic with petroleum jelly.
Repotting
As potting soil ages and breaks down, it begins to retain too much moisture. Repot the plant with fresh potting soil, removing as much of the old soil as possible without damaging the roots.
