Types
The three species of nematodes sold to kill fleas are Steinernema carpocapsae, Steinernema feltiae and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora. Since the third species prefers to eat weevils or caterpillars, the first two are ones most used for flea control.
Function
Nematode larvae live in soil where flea larvae live. The nematode larvae enter the flea larvae body through any body opening. They then vomit poisonous bacteria which kills the flea larvae in 48 hours.
Reliability
Nematodes are not reliable as flea killers, according to the University of Florida. Nematode larvae can only live outside while flea larvae can live indoors as well as in lawns and dirt.
