Cubic Feet
A cubic yard is 1 yard tall by 1 yard wide by 1 yard deep. One cubic yard of mulch equals 27 cubic feet. This is helpful to know because landscapers generally measure an area to be covered in square feet. For example, a bed 4 feet wide and 25 feet long would include 100 square feet. If 100 is multiplied by the depth of mulch desired in feet, the number of cubic feet of mulch required for the area is the result.
Ground Coverage
One cubic yard can cover approximately 320 square feet with an inch of mulch, 160 square feet with two inches or 108 square feet with three inches of mulch.
Truck Bed
A cubic yard of mulch fills up approximately one half of a standard pickup truck bed.
