Soil
Oak trees grow best when planted in a well-draining soil that is also nutrient-rich, such as a sandy loam. This tree variety does not perform well in alkaline soil. Amend the planting area soil with ground rock sulfur to lower the pH value to 7.0 or under.
Planting
Amend the planting soil by working 2 to 3 inches of organic compost to a depth of 18 to 24 inches. Perform this amendment the fall season before the spring planting date. Adding organic compost will increase the nutrient value and water drainage of the soil.
Care
Oak trees prefer a moderately dry soil and are susceptible to root rot when there is excess water around the root ball area. Apply a 3- to 4-inch layer of bark mulch around the tree to prevent weed growth and help hold moisture in the soil during the hot summer months. Placing mulch around the tree reduces the need for supplemental water applications.
