Flower Description
The orchid family contains about 25,000 species and is one of the largest flower families in the world. Therefore, exact descriptions of flowers vary greatly. Generally speaking, orchid flowers are blue, yellow, white, orange or red, although they can even be found in black. Some flowers also have markings. Leaves are usually light green, and some flowers are highly fragrant.
Varieties
The most common orchid species include Phalaenopsis, Cattleya and Dendrobium, due to their adaptability and relatively low maintenance. Paphiopedilum and Oncidiums are also easy to grow, according to the University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service.
Care
Orchids are sensitive to cold weather and require partial shade. According to the Clemson University Extension, inadequate light may result in dark leaves and lack of flowers. Orchids also need soil with excellent drainage. Common pests to look out for include mealybugs, thrips, scales and spider mites.
