Types
Examples of evergreen vines include English ivy, climbing fig and jasmine. Some of the hardier vines are fatshedera and evergreen smilax. Twining vines work best on trellises, although vines that climb using tendrils also work on trellises, sometimes with the added support of wire, garden twine or thin wooden stakes. Examples of these include herald's trumpet and bougainvillea.
Benefits
Many vines flower annually, providing the same aesthetic benefits as other flowering garden plants. Additionally, they create privacy and shade for any area in the yard when given a trellis to climb. They take little space, making them ideal in small gardens. Evergreen vines offer the added benefit of year-round green foliage in the landscape.
Warning
Avoid Boston ivy and other clinging vines for use on trellises near your home or other buildings. These vines climb surfaces by attaching themselves with small root-like protrusions that damage siding. They are safe for use on brick surfaces however, according to Clemson Cooperative Extension.
