Features
Growing about 20 feet tall and wide, Bloodgood Japanese maple is favored for its muscular, divided trunk and its deep red leaves that keep their color throughout the summer. It grows relatively quickly for a Japanese maple.
Culture
Bloodgood grows in USDA zones 5b to 8 in sunny or shady sites. A shady site ensures consistent summer color. Like most Japanese maples, it grows best in consistently moist, well-drained soil and is not picky about soil pH.
Pests/Problems
Japanese maples are shallow-rooted and require deep watering during extended drought. Mulching helps retain moisture. A healthy, well cared-for Bloodgood is unlikely to experience serious insect or disease problems.
Uses
Bloodgood Japanese mapleis used as a specimen tree in lawns, as well as along the edges of shady thickets. It makes a good patio tree and is well suited for use in container and rooftop gardens. Patio and container gardening also allows the gardener to appreciate up close the plant's blood-red stems.
