Uses
Evergreen shrubs are well suited for hedges and borders. Flowering evergreen shrubs adapted for shade are often used as foundation plantings and at entrances. Small or dwarf-sized shade shrubs are often grown in large pots for use on decks, patio and balconies.
Selection
Select the site for the evergreen shrub by keeping in mind the mature size of plants. Proper spacing is especially important when using evergreen shrubs in the foundation or entrances. For instance, foundation shrubs that grow tall are likely to start covering windows in a few years and will require more frequent pruning.
Growth Conditions
Creating forest-like conditions for shade evergreens is among the best strategies for their optimal health, as suggested by the University of Minnesota Extension. Most evergreen shrubs thrive in a moist, fertile soil and do not prefer temperature fluctuations. Mulch plants to retain moisture and to reduce chances of weeds. Irrigate regularly during active growth season.
