The length of time it takes a flower bulb to bloom varies depending upon the type of bulb, the time of year it is planted, the weather while it is in the ground and other factors.
Bulb Type
Flower bulbs come in many different varieties. Under perfect conditions, some start blooming 6 to 8 weeks after planting. However, this depends upon the type of bulb. Fall-planted bulbs bloom in the spring, spring-planted bulbs bloom in the summer and summer-planted bulbs bloom in the fall. Even so, not all bulbs bloom within the same amount of time.
Weather
The weather can affect when a bulb will bloom. In particular, fall bulbs must have 6 to 8 weeks in the ground during cold weather to begin the blooming process. If the winter is especially mild and temperatures are warmer than usual, these bulbs may not bloom in the spring. If the weather is extremely wet once bulbs have been planted, they may rot and never bloom.
Soil and Sunlight
Some flower bulbs do best in dry, sandy soil while others need rich, moist soil. The amount of sunlight or shade these bulbs prefer varies. If the proper soil conditions and correct amount of sunlight are not precise, bulbs may take longer than normal to bloom or may not bloom at all.
