Zoysia, also known as zoysiagrass, species are available with textures ranging from fine to coarse. Cultivars vary in their tolerance to a range of environmental conditions. Zoysia grows well in moderate shade in the southern U.S., but does not perform as well in shade in cooler climates, according to the Texas A&M University Extension.
Cultivars
Cavalier, Crowne, Diamond, El Toro, Palisades and Zorro all rate as excellent cultivars for relative shade tolerance, according to the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension. Among these cultivars, the University of Florida IFAS Extension notes that Palisades has good to excellent shade tolerance and Diamond offers excellent shade tolerance.
Northern Sites
Zoysia matrella grows in northern U.S. locations under moderate shade. The Texas A&M University Extension suggests that the grass should be allowed to remain taller than grass grown in full sun when it is used in shaded sites.
Transition Zones
Meyer shows tolerance to cold and partial shade, but is the least shade tolerant cultivar, according to the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension. The Texas A&M University Extension recommends it for transition zones where "summers are too hot and humid for cool season grasses and winters too cold for bermudagrass."
