Method
The seed potatoes are place on top of loosened soil. Sprinkle a thin layer of soil on the seed potatoes. Place a cage around the seed potatoes. Put 4 to 6 inches of straw over the potatoes. As the potato plants grow through the straw. add more straw keeping 1 inch of the potato plant above the straw until the cage is full.
Significance
Baby potatoes are ready for harvest when blossoms appear on top of the potato plants. Wait for the plants to die back when harvesting large potatoes. Remove the straw and pick up the potatoes on the surface of the ground.
Benefits
Growing potatoes in straw reduces weed growth. It also keeps the soil temperature cooler and reduces water evaporation. The straw method produces better quality potatoes with good color, shape and smoothness.
