Displaying fresh cut flowers in a vase is a great way to brighten up any room. However, how long the flowers stay fresh may vary depending upon the variety. Some of the most common cut flowers may remain fresh for different lengths of time.
Roses
Roses are one of the most popular flowers that are used as cut flowers. They normally stay fresh in a vase for at least three to five days. That time frame may be increased if they are put into a vase filled with a pint of hot water and 2 tsp. of white syrup. Be sure to also place the vase away from direct light or heat to extend their display life.
Lilies
Lilies tend to have a longer vase life than other flowers. In fact, if properly cared for, they may last up to 12 days. Cutting the stems of lilies every two to three days and adding fresh warm water to the vase can help them to remain fresher longer.
Tulips
Fresh cut tulips can normally last easily for a week to 10 days. A tip to possibly extend the vase life is to trim the stems at a diagonal cut by a half inch. Wrap them in tissue wrapping paper or newspaper and allow them to soak in a vase of fresh water for two hours. Then remove the paper and trim the stems diagonally again by a half inch. Place the flowers in a vase of fresh water mixed with a floral preservative.
