Features
Chaeto is known by other names, including green hair algae and spaghetti algae. The long, green strands are created by the end-to-end growth of the tubular-shaped cells, which grow into balls. The fast-growing algae is not typically appealing to many herbivorous aquatic species.
Function
The function of chaeto is to remove excess nutrients such as phosphates and nitrates from tank water. As the algae takes in these excess nutrients, the efficiency of "nutrient export" can be increased by pruning.
Environment
Chaeto is grown best in a refugium because its speedy growth sometimes can be a nuisance when allowed to grow in the aquarium. To reduce pH surges and quells, illuminate chaeto for 10 to 12 hours each night, when aquarium lights are off, using moderate to high light levels.
