There may be many reasons for needing to remove a lawn. Whatever the case, successfully removing a lawn need not be an overwhelming job.
Basic Tools
These are items that most homeowners have on hand. The most essential tool is a shovel. A flat-nose shovel works best, because it allows you to get beneath the sod. Rakes and hoes are also handy to help pry up the lawn.
Advanced Tools
More advanced tools may be required if basic tools do not work. A motorized tiller will tear into a lawn that resists shovels, rakes and hoes. A sod cutter is especially useful when you want to remove the lawn without destroying it.
Alternatives
There are other ways to remove a lawn without using the above-mentioned tools. You can eliminate grass by blocking out the sunlight. Lay down newspapers, followed by plastic sheeting. Herbicides are available at lawn and garden stores that will kill grass. Follow the instructions on the packaging, and apply the herbicide evenly to the entire lawn.
