Description
The timber primarily comes from redwood tree heartwood. The wood comes in a range of red hues. The wood grows straight-grained and offers a large amount of resistance to decay.
Range
The natural range of the trees occurs on the northern California coast in a narrow region about 450 miles long and 25 miles wide. But the trees also grow in the southern United States on a limited scale.
Uses
Redwood timber is used in high-quality construction thanks to its low shrinkage rates. The tree offers almost no odor or taste, making it ideal for storing liquids and solid foods.
Types
Supplies of redwood timber come from two different types of trees, including old growth trees and young-growth tree stands. Young-growth stands consist of trees less than 100 years old. Most available old-growth redwood has already been cut. The rest of the trees are either privately owned or protected by the federal or state government.
