Pumpkin
A pumpkin is a round fruit in the squash family, generally orange, with a hard rind. They are usually ripe in the fall, around the end of September or early October.
Squash
There are several varieties of yellow squash, all of which are harvested young and normally eaten complete with the seeds and rind. These are either cylindrical, like a zucchini, or club-shaped, with a larger bulb growing from a small neck.
Plants
The leaves of the yellow squash plant and the pumpkin plant are large, multilobed and look very similar to one another. The plants differ in that the pumpkin grows on a rambling vine typical of winter squash. Yellow squash grows on a large, bushy plant that grows more upright.
