Does Grass Grow at Night

Does Grass Grow at Night. Although grass needs energy from the sun to grow, it does not stop growing at night. It uses the energy it gathered from the sun during the day to make sugars, and actually grows most just before dawn.

Dark Reactions
The process of photosynthesis has two parts. In the daytime, plants use the sun's rays to store energy. At night, they use that energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugars, which they then use as food. Sugar-making is also known as respiration or the "dark reactions," because it can occur when the sun is down. Even at night, plants are still busy photosynthesizing.
Growth Spurt
2008 research by biologists at University of California at San Diego, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and Oregon State University has shown that plants have a growth spurt at night, just before dawn. Some plants (sorghum, for example) can grow as much as a centimeter in one night.
Shade Growth
The same genes that regulate night growth in plants also induce growth in the shade. Grass will grow taller around an object left on a lawn, because it is shaded by that object.
