Usage and Models
To use a string trimmer, the device's head part must first be strung. The older types required stringing, but newer models need only a cartridge replacement when all the nylon string has been used up. And when the cord breaks, the newer cartridges replenish the string automatically. String trimmers can work on gasoline or electric power. Electric versions can have an electric cord or be cordless. Cordless ones are lighter and can be carried in one hand. These models may contain a small lead-acid battery which lasts for around half an hour on a charge, then must be recharged. Gasoline versions are more practical because each tank lasts longer than the electric battery version (up to two hours at a time). In any case, an electric string trimmer which has a cord is limited by the proximity of an electric outlet and the cord can get in the way of the work.
Cutting Action
The string is made to revolve by a motor at speeds between 3,000 rpm and 10,000 rpm. The line is 0.0625 and 0.0155 inches thick, and is spun out from the cartridge by centrifugal force. The diameter of the cutting swath is usually between 8 and 22 inches although most models are usually spinning a diameter of 6 inches. String trimmers usually weigh between 15 and 20 pounds depending on their purpose. Some feature a harness and a deflector-flap for additional operator comfort and safety, to avoid flying debris hitting the operator.
Techniques and Tricks
A string trimmer can make a garden look beautiful and also can be useful for trimming grass around sprinkler heads that protrude, and other objects which cannot be cut by a lawnmower. Usually a string trimmer will be brought in to tidy up an expanse of lawn after a mower has been over it. Also, a string trimmer can get into places where the width of the mower will not fit.
A string trimmer can be used parallel to the ground to trim vertically-growing objects (such as grass around a protruding sprinkler head) or perpendicular to the ground to trim the edges of a lawn. Also, many string trimmers are fairly lightweight and can be carried easily in one hand. The gasoline versions can be worn with a strap.
