Globe basil refers to the growing habit of the basil, and is not limited to a specific variety. These plants produce a globe-shaped cluster of tiny leaves, and are sometimes referred to as miniature or bush basil. Spicy globe basil grows to a height of 8 to 12 inches and produces 1/4 to 1/2 inch leaves and white flowers. Harvesting globe basil differs from harvesting regular basil only by virtue of the size of the leaves.
Things You'll Need
Scissors (optional)
Harvest basil leaves at any time once the plant has produced at least 6 to 8 clusters of leaves and shows healthy growth. Clip a cluster of leaves free from the plant using care not to cut it back to the woody stem. New leaves only form on tender green stems.
Pick clusters of basil leaves for drying just as the flower buds form. Once basil blooms, much of its intense flavor dissipates.
Gather clusters of basil leaves in the morning after the dew has dried. Flavor is more intense in the morning when the plant is well-hydrated and fresh.
Trim the overall shape of globe basil with a pair of scissor or garden shears at any time. Use the trimmings as seasoning in your favorite recipes.
